Back in the 1970s, Phuket was visited by only a handful of foreigners, and the island’s now globally famous sandy beaches were home to farmers and fisherman. There was no high-end housing or hotels to speak of, let alone beach clubs, and groceries were bought from the back of a truck, a traveling market that sold fruit, vegetables, curries, salt—everything.
